Contemporary Gothic
As with all things, genre must evolve to remain relevant to its intended audience, and gothic is no different. The second core text we will be examining is Jim Jarmusch's 2013 film "Only Lovers Left Alive". This film tells the story of two vampires whose eternal existence has granted them an omniscient view of the world, both passionate and disembodied. We will be examining how gothic is represented in this film, most notably the evolution of the character of the vampire and how the film manipulates the conventions of the gothic to appeal to a contemporary audience. Film Analysis On initial viewing of the film, we will be focusing on four areas:
|
Task One
Task Two
|
Classic to Contemporary
"Only Lovers Left Alive" presents the character of the vampire in a very different way to classic texts such as Stoker's "Dracula". It is important to understand the purpose and execution of this to grasp how genre evolution is crucial to keeping it relevant to society. Task Three:
"Evaluate the characterisation of the vampires within OLLA and Dracula, accounting for the differences, including a deconstruction of authorial purpose and gothic conventions." |
