One of the most important skills you will need to succeed in the extension course is the ability to consider the relationships between texts and culture, and how the language and ideas of the text are shaped by contextual values. Task One: Research and define each of the following literary movements in your workbook. Also, find an example of an influential literary theorist within each:

Introduction to the Gothic Genre
The Gothic Genre finds its origins in the 18th Century, combining elements of fiction, horror and the sublime, emerging from the romantic era. Gothic originated in England, with much success in the 18th and 19th centuries. The term "Gothic" emerges from the architectural style of many British and European buildings of the time - many examples still exist today, such as Bath Abbey in England, Westminster Abbey in London, and Notre Dame in Paris (pictured to your left). Have a look at the images to the left to get a feel for gothic architecture. Task Two:
